Assuming the balloon can freely expand, calculate the volume of the balloon at this altitude.?

A weather balloon is inflated to a volume of 25.3 L at a pressure of 753 mmHg and a temperature of 23.1 degrees celcius. The balloon rises in the atmosphere to an altitude, where the pressure is 385 mmHg and the temperature is -16.2 degrees celcius.

1 Answer

  • p1 = 753 /760 = 0.991 atm

    V1 = 25.3 L

    T1 = 23.1 + 273.15 = 296.25 K

    p2 = 385 /760= 0.507 atm

    V2 = ?

    T2 = 273.15 - 16.2 = 256.95

    0.991 x 25.3/ 296.25 = 0.507 V2/ 256.95

    V2 = 42.9 L
