Hey guys I'm in Melbourne, Australia and I have a question about getting into a tattoo apprenticeship. So I've been wanting to get into tattooing for a while now. This year I'll be going into year 12 and I want to hopefully get an apprenticeship as soon as possible after finishing year 12. I was just wondering what, if any, courses I need to do before the apprenticeship. Obviously I need to know how to draw and I can but is their a specific tattooing course? Eg. Health and safety?

Hey man... dont listen to this *** "Tom P''. He doesn't know **** about the industry obviously. Tattooing is a growing buisness and it will continue to grow. I am a tattoo artist and have been for almost 10 years now. I LOVE my job. It's unbelievably rewarding. Now what you need to do it practice drawing. Alot. Go into as many shops as you can and talk to the artists and tell them that you have an interest in learning the buisness and that you are very serious about becoming an artist. Now get ready to be turned away. Because it will happen. Just keep trying and eventually someone will take you on as an apprentice. They will provide you with any classes you need as far as communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens. It will take some time but it is well worth it. I make anywhere from 85,000 to 120,000 dollars a year... and could make more but i only work 3-4 days a week. i have a great schedule and great pay. Work hard and you will be able to do it... if you want to talk to me more about what to do then just give me a shout. I am more than willing to try to find some artists in your area... even though im in the U.S.... and see whats going on down under. Keep your head up and practice. good'ay mate!

I'm not sure about Melbourne, but in Alberta, you usually make a profile book of your sketches and go around shop to shop asking if they will take you on as an apprentice. You won't get paid for it, but you'll be drawing and learning about the industry anywhere from a year up.
They will probably direct you to some courses that you will take about diseases and or first aid courses etc.
Then, most likely after your apprenticeship is over, they will hire you as an artist to keep mentoring you, and then you can make your own money.
As far as I know, there is no tattooing courses, but they might have some around where you live.
Good luck! Hope you like it!
