Hi!
I’m going to adopt a male belgian malinois – black labrador retriever mixed puppy and there are 7 black male puppies to choose from. Right now, they are 3 weeks old and look all the same, judging by the picture. I would like to know is it possible (even this early) to see if they will look more like the labrador or belgian malinois (head and body shape).
I’m hoping to pick the one that will have pointy ears and body posture like belgian. Maybe similar to this one:

If there’s anyone with some experience I would like to hear some opinions.
Thanks in advance 🙂
Thank you both for your answers.
I’m not buying this dog, I’m adopting it with my boyfriend. I owned a labrador and my boyfriend owned a german shepherd and before that also some malinois mix. We weren’t interested in buying purebred dog so we agreed on finding some mix of one of the dogs we already have experience with.
Why this mix?
Friend of a friend has them and he offered us a puppy so we decided to consider it because we had in mind something like this. We think this is a nice opportunity because they are still very young and therefore easier to train.
Why am I interested in looks of this dog?
At this moment they all appear the same so I don’t know how they will act when they grow up. That’s why I decided to pick one judging by the looks, although for me this is not that important.
🙂

I have owned, trained and worked Malinois for 35 years. I know that Malinois tend to pass off strong genes, but, when bred to another dog to produce mutts, there is no way to know at this age what the pups will look like when they are older.
If I were you, I would be much more concerned with what this dog will be like temperament wise rather then what it will look like. Malinois can make your life a living hell if they are the wrong dog for you or you have the wrong personality for the dog. Out of curiosity, what is the reason you are buying this particular mix?

Belgian Malinois – how to recognize characteristics in a mixed puppy?

Even as puppies, you should have a rough idea of the temperaments of the puppies. They have these puppy tests that they run on tiny pups to figure out if the pup will be dominant, submissive, etc. You can google that. Basing which pup to get off of it’s looks isn’t a great idea and I personally would never do something like that.

Just totally agree with Greek…. and can’t see the advantages of the mix tbh. Just hope it doesn’t have the worst of both.
Be concerned with the temperament and not the looks.
