(CH3NH3)Cl + H2O is this acidic or basic?

(CH3NH3)Cl + H2O is this acidic or basic? Please explain why. So far I know that Cl does not hydrolyze and is therefore neutral in this case.

  • Methylamine (CH3NH2) is a weak base and therefore cannot fully resist the tug of water molecules on the extra proton in the CH3NH3+ ion.

    Thus, the methylammonium ion is a weak acid.

    Thus: CH3NH3+ Cl- + H2O --> CH3NH2 + H3O+ Cl-

    CH3NH3Cl + H2O -> CH3NH2Cl + H3O

    In chemistry, the Brønsted–Lowry theory is an acid–base reaction theory, proposed independently by Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted and Thomas Martin Lowry in 1923. ]The fundamental concept of this theory is that an acid (or Brønsted acid) is defined as being able to lose, or "donate" a proton (the hydrogen cation, or H+) while a base (or Brønsted base) is defined as a species with the ability to gain, or "accept," a proton.

    So CH3NH3Cl donated a proton to water which makes it an acid. Water in this case acts as a base since water accepted the proton.
