You don't (or shouldn't) have to PAY to be on any street team. You are helping get the word out about a band or record company etc., and therefore are helping them out with advertising. As a reward you could receive free tickets or backstage passes, meet and greets etc. or exclusive merchandise. (I think of being on a street team as kind of like joining a fan club, but with more dignity and instead of paying to join, you work (on a very parttime basis) for your keep.) However, they don't have to give you anything; plenty of bands have a street team simply because they have fans who care that deeply about bringing word about their music to others (their friends, local radio stations and venues, etc.).

As a street team member you promote the band/record company. Sometimes, esp. with record labels, you have to pass a selection process (I don't think that is the case with Fueled By Ramen though).

I don't know if VersaEmerge has its own street team, but if you signed up for the Fueled by Ramen street team then you would be asked to promote multiple bands most likely. Fueled By Ramen is owned by a major label (Atlantic Records) so they have lots of street team members and are a very popular, well-known label.

You usually have a team leader for your specific area that coordinates all the activity of the band there. For instance, I'm on the Brand New street team. When they were about a month away from their show coming to my town, a mission came up to post fliers around town. I accepted it, but in order to be sent anything, I had to complete a few other smaller tasks so they knew I wouldn't take the posters and run. I did the smaller stuff, and the guy in charge of promotion in my area mailed me the posters. They'll usually have you take pictures of what you've done and send the pictures in for points. You can use the points to buy merchandise at their site. Other than putting up posters and stuff, there are usually other tasks for heavy points available, such as becoming a fan on facebook or twitter or making a chalk drawing of them in a public place.
