During training you get training pay, no BAH, BAH is only allowed if you live OFF-post (i.e. 30 minutes or more from base) as a single soldier. I got BAH as a specialist back in 2000 as a single soldier. But that was because I was dating the Colonels daughter. Only other means of getting BAH, is if you are married. If you are worried about your mother, you can try claiming her as a dependent, but then she might get stationed with you, if her health is bad this would prevent you from getting stationed in most overseas locations. Because it is considered lack of health care, and they don’t want to be held responsible. You should of talked to your recruiter about this before you enlisted, you can ask your drill instructors once you get to basic, about adding her as a dependent, or you may have to wait until you get to your duty station. But since you are National Guard none of this matters, because like posted in previous responses you need to be active army to get BAH, if National Guard is activated then you are deployed. So you wouldn’t be able to receive BAH anyways.

National Guard Bah

TRAINING DOES COUNT. However, you will NOT get BAH if you’re living with your family. But yes, as a national guard member, you ARE eligible for BAH even if you have ZERO dependents. How do I know? I was a Private First Class in BCT/AIT who received BAH without dependents rate (hmm, kind of makes sense why the government separates a “with dependents” and “without dependents” rate–b/c you aren’t required to have dependents). If you actually own or rent your own house/apartment (not one from your family), all you need to do is bring a copy of the lease/mortgage and a copy of a utility bill to finance and fill out a form requesting the BAH.
In my current situation, I happen to live off post (still national guard and now a specialist). I am on orders for more than 180 days. I had to get a certificate of non-availability (CNA) showing that I was unable to live on post. In this situation, not only do I get BAH (w/o dependents) but I also get BAS to offset cost of meals.
I hope this answered your question and resolved some inaccurate information I read in some of the responses. If you have any questions you should discuss these with DFAS. I say DFAS instead of a recruiter or other NCO b/c quite frankly, and with no disrespect intended, most army types are unfamiliar with national guard and even those in the national guard are not all experts at every facet within the organization–myself included. It just so happens that this was MY experience with being NG and getting BAH. Good luck with everything.

National Guard members, like the Reserves, only receive BAH while in training or when they are Activated for more than 30 days. They do not receive BAH II all year. BAH II is a BAH differential that is paid when the member is activate for less than 30 days…that’s the two weeks annual training is an example of when BAH II would be paid.

Okay dude, it’s been a while, but here’s your best answer. You will not get BAH during Basic/AIT unless you have a dependant. Just helping your mom out will not count. She has to be your dependant.
When you get back make up a lease agreement with your mom showing you pay rent (it doesn’t matter how much, but you need to pay it) get it notarized and then when you get mobilized to deploy YOU WILL GET BAH WITHOUT DEPENDANTS. Your unit will be able to help you make a lease agreement, they probably even have a blank form letter for it. As long as you are paying what the lease agreement says, you are free to pocket the excess.
Good luck.

National Guard members only et BAH when they are activated. you will not receive BAH while in Basic because you have no dependents..you are single. The only way to get BAH is if you claim your mom as your dependent. you would need to be able to prove that you provide over 50% of her TOTAL care. It’s very difficult.
I’m sorry but you wn’t get BAH.

I’m not positive you get it for training, but I think you do.
Basically, all I had to do was sign a statement saying that I had a lease agreement, and write down what that payment was for. I think the military does some research of their own to decide how much you should get though. They’ll walk you through the process when you get to Reception.
Your recruiter should be able to answer this for you. If nothing else, you can try setting it up so your mom can withdraw some of your check to help out. Be careful with that option though.

BAH will be based on the address of your dependents as of the date you get activated.

In training you only receive partial BAH since the military is giving you a place to stay.
Partial BAH: A member without dependents who is living in government quarters is entitled to a Partial BAH
You get partial BAH since you will be living in governmant quarters during training.
