... x^2 + 2x - 1
Factor by "completing the square"
... x^2 + 2x = 1
or x^2 + 2(x)(1) = 1
or x^2 + 2(x)(1) + 1^2 = 1^2 + 1
or (x + 1)^2 = 2
or x + 1 = ± √2
or x + 1 ± √2 = 0
... x^2 + 2x - 1
= (x + 1 - √2)(x + 1 + √2)

Use the quadratic formula to solve
ax²+bx+c=0
where
a=1
b=2
c=-1
x = [-b ± √(b²-4ac)] / (2a)
= [-2 ± √(2² - 4·1·(-1))] / (2·1)
= [-2 ± √8] / 2
= [-2 ± 2√2] / 2
= -1 ± √2
x² + 2x - 1 = (x + 1-√2)(x + 1+√2)

(x-1)(x-1)=0 so x equals 1

(-2+-sqrt8)/2 = (-1+-2*sqrt2)/2
,', x = -1/2 + sqrt 2 or x = -1/2 - sqrt 2
