I hear this "first of all, second of all," more and more. It seems to me it's not right and one should just say "first of all, second, third, etc. I've listened to a prominent radio talk show journalist get up to "fourth of all."
Who is correct? Thanks

In common usage, "first of all" seems to be the only one that is generally accepted. If making multiple points, "first of all" is usually followed by "second" or "secondly", then "third" or "thirdly", and so on.
The inclusion of "of all" for the first item in a list seems to be an indicator emphasizing to the person spoken to that a list of items or points is to follow. Thus, it is unnecessary after being used once.

“First of all” makes sense when you want to emphasize the primacy of the first item in a series, but it should not be followed by “second of all,” where the expression serves no such function. And “secondly” is an adverbial form that makes no sense at all in enumeration (neither does “firstly”). As you go through your list, say simply “second,” “third,” “fourth,” etc.

Iif you follow common english useage rule,, if the phrase is indeed used and understood then by definition itI's correct!! But -and -I know some say that be a conjuction!- I am watching sky news uk 7 30 am sunday 31 and the journalist said 2nd of all TWICE in the same sentence.!!!! GRRRR!! Or maybe he meant two squared which would be fourthly ...of all..!? ,[email protected]

First Person: Narrator is the character. E.g. "I ran through the forest, looking frantically behind at the dark shadow gaining ground." Second Person: Narrator is talking directly to the reader like with self-help books. E.g. "You find that if you start thinking positively, people will be more attracted to you." Third Person: Narrator is telling a story about a character: "The woman walked into the shop." I like first because it is more connected to the character.

First of all is really the first, so you can't say second of all, because then the second would be the first, being before anything else and there before the first, so then the second would become the first of all and the first would be eliminated. You could carry this process on ad nauseam.

It may be correct, but unusual. I never heard "fourth of all".
And I rarely hear "third of all"/thirdly, even the enumeration continues after three.
I mostly hear "first of all/firsltly", "second of all/secondly", and then the speaker will use either "third, fourth, fifth etc."

Yeah, first-person = I ran; I thought; I said. Second-person = You ran; you thought; you said. Third-person = S/he ran; s/he thought; s/he said. Nope, just these three. "We" is first-person, "it" and "they" are third-person. I always prefer third-person. Second-person is practically unreadable and first-person is definitely a turn-off, for me.
