• It would be "longer than" because you use than when comparing things or choosing things. For example, 1) he is heavier than ___ (comparing), 2) Rather than walk, I prefer to ride (choosing). Then is used for referencing times, generally. For example,1) I went shopping and then I ate dinner. Or 2) We were waiting for an hour and then the bus came. I hope this helps you a little.

  I'd expect to have used ''than'' rather than ''then''.

  THEN is usually used as a LINK word in cases like:
