Is it rude to walk around a college classroom barefoot?

This girl in my class wears sandals to school every day and once she sits down she takes them off, puts them by her chair and doesn't put them back on until she leaves the classroom completely. During the class if she throws something away she will leave her shoes off, to get a paper anything. It is very strange.

Is this rude or just something wierd I should ignore?

  • Welcome to college. Land of wierdos.

Most people don't realize their feet are really ugly.

  • I don't think it's rude or weird. I wore flip flops to class all the time in college and usually took them off when I got in there. What's more comfortable than shorts and bare feet? I did walk in the classroom barefoot also and went barefoot outside all the time. Never once did I get a plantar wart or anything like that because I take great care of my feet.

This may have something to do with me being a gymnast, which meant bare feet in the gym from the locker room to the gymnastics room, and being an artists model which meant bare feet in the classroom and on the modeling platform.

In my Psychology class, my instructor commented on my comfort with going barefoot and said that for those who are afraid to do so in front of others, or who have a problem with it that it can be a sign of sexual inhibition.

Let the girl be free to be herself and worry about your self.

  • If you have to ask, it is not rude. I am a college student, and I have not worn any type of footwear since before college started. I also wear button down shirts and jeans or slacks. I think I put a formal look out to those around me, and many have commented that I always dress nicely. There is nothing rude, crude, or even weird about bare feet.

I think tracking mud inside on your shoes is rude, shoes that make a lot of noise to walk in are rude, and brightly colored shoes are rude. However bare feet are not.

As we speak, I am at college, about to go into my calc 2 class barefoot, as always.

  • Plainly, it is very casual to slip your shoes off in class. However, I was casual in college too, so I don't see it as an issue.

I can envision a professor who might object to bare feet in class in that he or she wants to create a more professional atmosphere in class, but I will assume that this is not the case here.

I fail to see how going barefoot would be rude in a casual classroom setting. I suppose you could argue it's distracting, but then I suppose showing up to class in a loud outfit or with an eccentric hairstyle would be rude. No, I think it's just her way of living her life.

FWIW, going barefoot is actually good for the feet. I'm a frequent barefooter myself, and my sympathies tend to rest with the young lady you're referring to. However, whether you approve or not, your approval is certainly not required, so live and let live. I'd ignore it.

    Thanks for the question.

  • I don't think it is rude, or weird. I don't even understand why it would bother you. I am from California and people here always kick off their flip-flops. Personally, I wouldn't do what she is doing, BUT I don't find her behavior to be imposing on others in any way. If anything, she is walking very quietly in the classroom. Sometimes I find high heels clicking and tapping away on a floor to be annoying. But once again, that isn't rude either. It's just noisy shoes.

  • It's neither weird nor rude. I did the same in college whenever I was wearing sandals. A lot of people just went barefoot. Apart from wanting to keep my feet soft and nice, I could never see any difference between wearing sandals and simply going barefoot, and I always wanted the guys I was with to just go barefoot. Just do your own thing and let your barefoot classmate do hers. College is supposed to be a time and place to learn about ourselves and to be ourselves. It's neither the time nor the place to be judgmental of others.

By the way, foot odor is never a problem in people who go barefoot or wear sandals. That odor is only caused by bacteria that can only grow in warm, moist, dark, confined places, like inside peoples shoes.

  • No problem, as long as her feet don't smell or are ugly, it's fine. I'd probably do the same. Whenever I'm at the library, I always take my shoes off and am barefoot, it's just more comfortable.

  • As long she is not hurting anyone else it shouldn't be a problem. She must love to walk barefoot if she takes off her sandals in class.

  • It is not rude nor weird. Why do you pay attention to it? I walk around barefoot most of the time. Heck, if she wants to run around naked in the classroom she can. Well as long as no one complains.
