Is there such a thing as natural black hair or is it just DARK DARK brown?

Is there such a thing as natural black hair or is it just DARK DARK brown?

A friend of mine and I have had this argument before, and I want to know what others think.

The friend states that there is such a thing as black hair, but I beg to defer. She uses the excuse that Asians have natural black hair, but I said that is only in the dark where no light is on it. If you were to look at it in the sun, a shade of brown would faintly appear, signifying that it is indeed just dark, dark brown.

THEN she said that an African American has black hair, but one of my friends (who is African American) stated that her hair is not black, but dark brown. BUT there is a fact that she is a small part hispanic, so we went onto another person. HOWEVER, that person had shaved his hair all off, so you can't see the hair clearly.

So, what do you guys think? If there such a thing as natural black hair, or is it all just dark brown?

Also, I'd like to add that if it is PURE BLACK, then when the light touches it, the color that makes the hair appear shiny would be white. PURE WHITE.

Also, i have watched this thing on t.v. where it was proven that there is no such thing as natural black hair. Also, black is black. There really is no such thing as a different shade of black because then it would be considered a dark gray. The color black is just black.

Also, I am Asian, and I don't have black hair. My family doesn't have black hair, and none of my Asian friends have black hair. :] So give me a better reasoning, please. Don't be stereotypical with the Asians have black hair crap.

  • True black hair is very, very rare. If in the sunlight, there should be a blue tint if it is black. It is possible but extremely rare. I have not myself come across true black vιʀԍιɴ hair and I do hair. Lots of hair every day that I work. I would have to say that you are right. True black would be more a freak of nature.

Yes you can get natural jet black hair. It's like natural platinum/white blonde hair. Only a few people have it naturally but so many people can now get the shade with the help of their hairdresser or a trip to the drug store and a DIY dye job. If you go to Asian and Africa you will see a lots of people with "black" hair that varies from very dark brown to the jet black that has an almost bluish sheen to it like a crows wing. I've also seen this among Native Americans/Canadians and amongst a few Irish people where it starkly contrasted with skin so pale their veins looked blue!

  • I think there is such thing as black hair but it is extremely rare. Light that reflects off of it has to be white or bluish, if it's brown then your hair is too.

Source(s): My friend has completely black hair that reflects light as white.
  • Yes. Most African Americans' hair is the really dark brown though. I actually don't think it's any 1 specific nationality that has black hair. It's just more common in some Asian nationalities than it is in any others. I have a friend who's hair is actually black.

  • Not "technically" as hair is colored by melanin:

So it is just very brown. When I say very I can not stress enough that eventually when you get the pigment dark enough it will "appear" black, and that for all intensive purposes it is "effectively" black, but chemically speaking no.

Even the black version of eumalanin isn't a chemically/spectroscopically pure black, but simply a darker and less brown than the brown version.

After awhile though it does become dark enough to appear that way but still isn't, but I mean come on aren't we just splitting hairs at that point?

  • Their is a such thing as true black hair. Asians are probably the most common with it. But it is rare for true black hair. Some African americans may have true black hair but most are just dark brown.

  • Good question, it is genetically impossible to have black anything! Eyes, hair, skin; of dark pigmentation is very dark brown.
