Hi I am thinking of getting a career being a groomer. And I was wondering if if I need to go to grooming school in order to become one. And also if there is one in calgary since I live there.

You either need to find a "school" of some sort that mimics real life (IE you learn in an actual grooming parlor, where you interact with clients and dogs from day one, as opposed to a "classroom") or you find an experienced groomer to teach you while you work ("apprenticeship").
There are pros and cons to both options so you'll have to do some research to see which one will best work for YOU. Your best bet would be to go into some grooming salons, talk to some of the groomers, and get their opinions on learning options.
I would also shadow a groomer for a day or two and spend some time figuring out if this is really what you want to do. It isn't all glamor and ritz, with a dog standing completely still while you buzz around with a fancy pair of clippers. Dogs can and do squirm, dogs can be and are pains in the butt, dogs can and do bite. It can be tough, back breaking work where you stand anywhere from a few to over seven hours a day and lift dogs 40+ pounds.
Not easy work.
Below is a link with details on how to get started. there are online grooming schools and at least 2 in Calgary. Just google dog grooming schools in Calgary to get thier names. Good Luck

When I was looking for a school, I just took out the phone book and called about 60 of the groomers and asked what they would recommend. I live just outside of Vancouver and we have 4 schools. Groomers like to gossip 🙂 So I learned all about the different teaching methods, what the owners and instructors were like, if it would be by the book or hands on. A number of schools take advantage of you, you'll be bathing and brushing for 2 months before they actually teach you anything. Make sure you can actually talk to graduated students from the school, they'll be able to tell you what you need to know.
