What does a horseshoe nail on a necklace mean?

I met a girl who was wearing a necklace that was a horse shoe nail on a heavy cord. My daughter asked her where she got it, and she said it was very important and her church gave it to her. I didn't want to press her for details, but I was wondering what the significance of it was. I recognize a "nail of the cross", but usually I just see crosses made out of nails, or see actual farriers wearing them, not just a single nail. Can anyone tell me why she considers it so important?

  • Maybe for luck? Horseshoes are known to be lucky. But really, I think that the horseshoe nail necklace was probably just a personal momento rather than some sort of holy or superstitious object.

  • Think about for a minute. I don't think they had nice shiny nails back in the day. They were probably more like a railroad spike. That, would be a little much to wear on the neck, so I'm thinking that the horseshoe nail was as close as she thought she would get.

  • For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.

For want of a shoe, the horse was lost.

For want of a horse, the battle was lost.

From loss of the battle, a war was lost."

One should always have a spare nail. Guess she's prepared for Battle

  • She considers it important because her church gave it to her.

I have no idea what the story was that came along with the nail, but apparently she must have liked it.
