What does Angostura Bitters taste like?

I am trying to make a Mojito Mock-tail and I wanted to know what Angostura Bitters taste like so that I can replace it with something that has the same taste and effect as the bitters does. Something easy to find and not too expensive either. Could I maybe use blood orange juice and tonic water? Also if anyone even has another Mock-tail that is Latin flared I would LOVE having the recipe. I need it by Sat. Thank you for your time!!

  • For years as I was not a drinker I would get a club soda, with a lime wedge and a few shakes of AGB, they has a bit of a medicinal flavour, not strong or offish, a bit like a mix of cloves and allspice, they use 12 different herbs, spice and roots to make it, while it is 40% alcohol, you use so little it does not affect the drink, not much can be used to substitute it as it has a unique flavour, colour wise a dash of Grenadine is fine. They sell small bottles look for it in the are they sell the drink mixes for adult beverage around the beer and wine aisle in the US, here in Canada they sell it in the soft drink area.

There really isn’t substitute for Angostura bitters, but you shouldn’t need one. There are no bitters in a mojito! For latin/tropical mocktails, try fruit based margaritas/daiquiris, pina coladas, blue Hawaiis, etc.

  • Bitters are seriously about 12 bucks a bottle, and last for years, as one splash is enough for a drink.

Just buy the bitters. The alcohol content is so low with the amount you need it won’t even get a fly drunk.

  • try with ginseng candy dissolved in hot water or any snack with ginseng flavor and add to that plenty soy sauce, let it stand all night at room temp.
