the opposite to being born with a silver spoon in your mouth - that is, underprivileged

I means you come from a poor family. Some people say "Oh, she/ he was born with silver spoon in their mouth" meaning that that are very privileged and get everything you want when you want it. So, a plastic spoon is the other end of the scale. Meaning a very poor background and that u have to work hard for what you get.
Source(s): I grew up listening to my dad playing this kind of music and about the age of 12 I fell in love with the lyrics of these songs. -
It comes from the saying, "to be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth," which refers to someone who was born into wealth. To be born with a plastic spoon in one's mouth would refer to someone who was born into a lower-class family, or to someone who was raised under less privileged conditions.

"I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth" refers to waaay long ago when the wealthy would recieve metal spoons to eat with, and the poor would recieve wooden ones. This is the same pincipal. Meaning, that being born with a plastic is also signifying a poverished upbringing.
