What happens if I miss the FAFSA deadline?

I am enrolled in my university as a sophomore for the fall of 2011. I missed the deadline to renew my FAFSA and turn it in which was June 20th 2011. I am currently filling it out and trying to submit it. I do not know what will happen and what this means for me. Do I need to withdraw from this semester since I missed the deadline? Or if I fill it out late will my aid just come late and pay for my stuff still? I wish I knew I had to fill it out again I don’t receive a lot of help from family so I had no idea I had to fill it out every year. Last year my mother did it for me and now I’m on my own Which would be okay i I hadn’t missed the date what should I do I don’t think beating my head on a wall is helping much lol jk

  • If you missed your school’s deadline usually they will still let you apply and if they have aid left they will let you. Call you FA office. Ask them these questions because every college is different. Usually they will work with you. If you file and they know you are getting aid they will not mind that you have a balance because they know you will be getting the aid, maybe late. It might not even be late so just call them. Dont panic. Also, if I did not do stuff for my daughter, she would be lost too, this stuff is confusing.

  • The deadline for FAFSA for the current 2010-2011 school year is June 30th 2011. So you didn’t miss the deadline just some priority deadlines. Also, even though Ohio’s state deadline might be October 1st its still a first come first serve basis and the later you apply either the lower you get or you get none. Normally it takes about 2 months from filling out the FAFSA until the school has it completed. If you can get $2400 in pell grant money than thats $1200 per semester!

  • The deadline you are referring to is set by your school, not the Department of Education. Unless you’ve been receiving time-sensitive scholarships or grants from your school and were hoping to receive them again this year, your late FAFSA should have no impact on your financial aid except to delay receipt of your financial aid letter. In other words, if you were counting on that letter to plan your finances for the upcoming school year, you’ll have to wait longer to get it. Your late FAFSA will not impact the amount of any federal loans or grants you would normally receive.

Between last-minute transfer students, students enrolling during the school year and late FAFSAs like yourself, your school most likely handles financial aid throughout the school year. I wouldn’t worry about it. You should be fine!

  • there is no deadline -fill it out now for the 2011-12 school year. complete a new one after 1/5/2012 for the next school year. don’t forget to apply for scholarships, too. see your financial aid counselor for more specific info.
