-What is a branch family in Japan?
-Do they really "serve" the main family even though they are related?
-Do any still exist?
-Were they used to be common?

Branch family is made when someone from a family leaves and create a new family. But it was abolished after WW2. Now it does not legally exist.

In Japan, the main family (honke) generally passes down through the eldest sons, other sons will form branch families (bunke). Over generations, this forms a pyramid structure. It stems from ancestor worship and although it is not so important today, particularly in the cities, in the countryside, everybody knows their relationship regarding the honke.
