What is a branch family in Japan?

-What is a branch family in Japan?

-Do they really "serve" the main family even though they are related?

-Do any still exist?

-Were they used to be common?

  • Branch family is made when someone from a family leaves and create a new family. But it was abolished after WW2. Now it does not legally exist.

  • In Japan, the main family (honke) generally passes down through the eldest sons, other sons will form branch families (bunke). Over generations, this forms a pyramid structure. It stems from ancestor worship and although it is not so important today, particularly in the cities, in the countryside, everybody knows their relationship regarding the honke.
