Okay so my dentist told me a couple of times that I have something called a cross bite and I have no clue that that is. My friends told me that I have an over bite, but I am not sure what that is either. (I don't think its too serious) I HATE my teeth and my mom says they are great, but when people are around me all the time, do they get used to what my teeth look like or something cause they are UGLY to me! What is the treatment for a cross bite/over bite? I am going to the orthodontist soon, but I wanted to get your opinion! Thanks! (Okay, so my two top teeth don't match the space on my bottom two teeth?) And one side is kinda moved over a little bit; both sides are not equal?

An overbite is how much your top front teeth overlap your bottom front teeth when your teeth are together. Many people confuse overbite with overjet (which is what all the posters have done so far in answering your question). So overbite is a vertical problem and overjet is a horizontal problem involving FRONT TEETH. To be clear, overjet is how far the top front teeth stick out away from your bottom front teeth in a horizontal direction while overbite is how much your top teeth cover up your bottom teeth when you close down. A crossbite is when a tooth/teeth are in a reverse normal relationship to the opposing tooth/teeth. Normally, upper teeth overhang lower teeth (sit farther out) by half a tooth or so. In a crossbite, the bottom tooth/teeth sits out more than the upper by half a tooth or more and a top tooth/teeth will sit inward too far by at least a half a tooth's width. One tooth can be in a crossbite or the whole side of the mouth. Crossbites are easily corrected without surgery using expansion, removable orthodontic appliances, or braces.

Crossbite Braces

An overbite means that, when your mouth is closed, your top jaw sticks out a little bit more than your lower jaw. So your chin doesn't jut forward as much as it should, and your teeth don't line up quite right.
A cross bite is the same concept, but sideways. So like, your lower jaw is a little bit to the left or right of your top jaw when your mouth is closed. Get it?
Both types of "bite issues" just mean your teeth don't line up evenly.

You probably look something like Sloth from "The Goonies." That is what a slight cross bite looks like. But seriously, braces will most likely correct that.

An overbite is when one set of your teeth (top or bottom) pushes out a little farther than the other set. It's where your top jaw (or bottom) pushes out farther than your bottom jaw (or top). Sorry, it was difficult to explain.
