What is Prince in Japanese?

I know that Hime is princess. What is the prince equivalent to that?

I also know that Oujo is also princess. And that Ouji is Prince.

If princess has two words describing it, then so must prince, right?

  • Formally Ouji and Oujyo are applied for the people of the royal family.

Meanwhile waka/ waka-sama and hime/ hime-sama are the old words meaning children of high class people in the old time.

These are definitions of the each single word. In the contemporary Japan, there are no person called waka or hime in the true meaning of words.

However, there are some expanded applications with these words.

    Ex.

Hoshi no ouji-sama ( The prince of stars)

Hanikami-ouji ( the bashful young golf player who gained much attention in the tournaments)

Uta hime ( the excellent female singer)

    Good luck!

In contemporary usage, without for the royal family, the words as hypocoristic names or character’s names in fictions are; hime, (o)himesama, oujyo. ouji, oujisama.

  • The antonym of Hime(姫)is Hiko(彦).

You can check it out in an online dictionary:right after the symbol ⇔,which means antonym(though you might know)

    in blue letters http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=%E5%A7%...

Note:Hiko(彦)is in rare use in Japan. That's probably the reason i've got some thumbs-down. But this is OFTEN used in male names like masaHIKO(雅彦)etc.

Yes, prince is Ouji(王子) as well.

  • hi i m Japanese

    i should say "waka" 若

    姫様 若様

    姫君 若君

    王女 王子

but i recommend only Ouji for prince.

because "waka" gives me impression of Japanese historical drama of Samurai era, and to avoid misunderstandings.
