  • Are you sure you want 108? That's a bit overkill for standard gauge railroad, and if you've got a funny gauge, it's going to have a big impact on the price of whatever tie you buy.

    If you want 96" or 102", try A&K http://www.akrailroad.com/

For concrete, talk to Rocla http://www.roclatie.com/mrt.htm or CXT http://www.lbfoster.com/content.aspx?id=1914 or Koppers http://www.koppers.com/htm/PandS_Rail_KSA.html

In California we pay about $42 for 6x8x96 hardwood ties. But those are an odd size.

  • DO NOT use railroad ties that have been treated. The chemical they were treated with is called creosote and is very dangerous. Another alternative is purchasing 4x4's and putting those up. They also sell kits for vegetable garden borders that you can build yourself. I think Lee Valley sells them sometimes.

my friend has railroad ties surrounding his garden. i have ate the vegetables he has given me and they taste fine. perhaps someone better qualified (a chemical engineer) or biologist would know the true answer

  • I was talking to our Road Master last week as ties were being unloaded at track side. They were hardwood and he said they were $39 each and came from Wisconsin. (We're in Minnesota.)
