What's the difference between a theme and thesis in an essay? Is theme more general? If it is, how is it different between a topic?

Theme is the main idea of the piece of literature, art, film, etc.-- whatever it is you are being asked to write about. It is the "lesson" that is being taught. For example, "greed" in an incomplete theme, but "greed is the root of all evil" would be a valid theme of a work.
Thesis is the actual statement in your paper that expresses what the idea behind your essay. It is what YOUR paper is about, which in turn, is a statement that also conveys what the work being discussed is about. Therefore, a "thesis" normally contains a "theme". An example might be: In "The Pardoner's Tale", Chaucer expresses through both the actions of the Pardoner as well as through the actions of the characters in his tale, the notion that greed is the root of all evil.
Hope that helps.

A thesis statement is a specific argument in favor of something you believe in.
"Dominoes Pizza tastes like cardboard."
"The Yankees are the greatest baseball team."
"Cats are a woman s best friend."
It can be true, it can be garbage. But, it s a specific argument. Thesis statements are crucial in essays, but not elsewhere in literature. For creative writing, your best option is a theme, which doesn t state an argument, so much as raise a question (depending on the skill of the author). In literature the story comes first, and the theme tags along, if and when it fits. Here are some of Stephen King s favorite themes:
"Is it ever possible to close Pandora s technobox once it s open?"
"Why, if there is a God, do such terrible things happen?"
"There is a thin line between reality and fantasy. Where is it exactly?"
"Why is violence so terribly attractive to fundamentally good people?"

Theme is the underlying idea or motif of the piece. Thesis is the argument you are presenting. Example: The inhumanity of slavery is the theme of Huckleberry Finn. My thesis is that Huck's conscience did not allow him to fully accept slavery as right or proper, even though it was a generally acceptable practice in his environment, because slavery is morally wrong.

A theme can be more general and not be specificly stated, but you get what it is. ex). the overlying theme is that the good guy gets the girl. Where a thesis statement is a direct message in an opening paragraph that states what the rest of the paper is talking about or proving.

A Thesis is a specific statement in which you are trying to prove. The Theme is the general topic of the essay.
