In general, a person who "runs point," also known as being the "point man" is the person who is in charge, whom everyone else looks to, to lead and coordinate some activity that they are involved in.
Jason Kidd is a basketball player, and to "run point" or be the "point man" in basketball means that he is playing the position of "point guard." That is the player who runs the team's offense (based on the coach's game plan). So the definition is similar to the one above, because the point guard is in charge of offense, the goal of which is to score points.
