Why did the game designers of Pokemon make Onix so weak?

Onix, the Rock Sɴᴀκᴇᴅ Pokemon.

Ever since Red/Blue he's been so damn crappy. Why did the game designers make him so weak physically? Hes a giant sɴᴀκᴇᴅ for pete sake! He's even WEAKER than Geodude.

On top of that, his HP is low! Why? Steelix is okay, but Onix should not be THAT weak. lol I think his HP should at least be high 300 to low 400

  • Because HP up to 300-400 puts it on par to third stage evolutions with base HP of 100+ and Onix is only first stage. If they made it too powerful, then Steelix would need to be even better than Onix and then Steelix would be completely overpowered. Geodude in most ways, except attack, is weaker than Onix too.

Game balance mainly, and sometimes the game designers make really cool Pokemon, and give them terrible stats or moves. Cough. Spinda.

Imagine you are in the evil organisation and you are one of the elites you definitely do not want any ambitious underlings to overthrow you So you give them weak pokemon to confront intruders but not strong enough to overthrow you regarding their diversity of pokemon, they mainly use pokemon to do their dirty work So theft, bullying and other evil acts are often best left to specific pokemon think of them as standard issued weapons with little upgrade the trainers do not bother to level them up since they are tools and the image of using pikachu to do these acts just feels wrong
