  • Crescent City alludes to the course of the Mississippi River around and through the city.

New Orleans has many nicknames including Saint City, The City That Care Forgot, Crescent City, and probably its most famous, The Big Easy. Now for a little history on two of the city’s more popular nicknames. There once was a New Orleans dance hall named The Big Easy but eventually, the nickname came to refer to the city and its gentle pace of life. The Mississippi River flows in the shape of a crescent around the city so that’s why many refer to New Orleans as the Crescent City.

  • The second responder is correct. New Orleans got that nickname because of the shape of the Mississippi River curving around the city--it forms a crescent.

This is [a] euphemism for New Orleans, like the "Crescent City," that is attributed to Betty Guillaud, a gossip columnist for the Times Picayune, in the '70s as a term of endearment and an answer to the then I Love New York City hype. If it's the "Big Apple" then New Orleans is the "Big Easy," where everything is slower, simpler and easy-going.

  • The city's has several nicknames. "Crescent City" alludes to the course of the Mississippi River around and through the city; "The Big Easy" was possibly a reference by musicians in the early 1900's to the relative ease of finding work there, but most New Orleanians attribute the term to the city being more carefree and slowed down than cities like New York (the Big Apple); "The City that Care Forgot" refers to the outwardly easy-going, carefree nature of many of the residents.

  • Because the city is surrounded by waters of the Mississippi River in a manner shaped like a crescent

  • It's the River. It makes the shape of a crescent. As one point the river actually flows north.

That's why when you are in the city North and South directions are useless. It's the river side or the like side. Uptown (up river) or downtown.
