There’s this praying mantis that lives in my bathroom since it was a teeny tiny bug. I’ve put it outside numerous times throughout the past two weeks but it keeps popping up in the bathroom, and it’s kind of creepy because no one likes to be watched while they’re taking a pee. It gets pretty close to everyone who goes in there and I was wondering if they sting or bite?
I think it climbs over the top of the screen in the bathroom. I don’t mind it being there so much as my guests do…unless they bite… then I’ll take it further away so it can’t find it’s way back.

Generally, mantises are protected simply by means of concealment. When directly threatened, many mantis species stand tall and spread their forelegs, with their wings fanning out wide. The fanning of the wings makes the mantis seem larger and more threatening, with some species having bright colors and patterns on their hind wings and inner surfaces of their front legs for this purpose. If harassment persists, a mantis may then strike with its forelegs and attempt to pinch or bite. The common mantis found in North America is not poisonous and does not sting. A mantis will bite if you hold it and annoy it, but it can’t hurt you unless you have very thin skin. An average adult would only feel a pinch without any other effect.

I was bitten by a praying mantis today! I wasn’t stung. It was in the driveway, and a mocking bird was pecking at it. The praying mantis was in attack mode with all of it’s wings showing, and it’s front legs up. I was stupid and picked this thing up while it was still freaked out about the bird, and it bit me. I dropped it, had it climb on a piece of paper and put it in the backyard. It was in a very bad mood.

It will only bite, if it is of a species large enough to do so, and it mistakes your finger for food, (meal worm etc) or if provoked, however species that prefer flying food only generally will not bite it is a very very rare occasion. I have many Phillocrania Paradoxa “Ghost Mantids” really cool looking species and super easy to care for. they are very docile and non aggressive and will typically run away than stand and fight. and do not chase prey but rather sit and wait and then strike. they love to dance. and when i hand feed them honey on a toothpick they wag their butts like a dog it is really fun to watch. super easy, holdable praying mantis’.

It’s strange that a praying mantis lives in your bathroom. How does it get back in if you put it outside. There must be a food source for it………….Also, it is illegal to harm them as they are very useful predators. I use to order them from a catalog to let loose in my garden. I doubt that it would bite you.

Yes, I picked one up from a parking lot trying to save it from getting run over and it stung me. Probably because I had it enclosed in my palms and it felt threatened.

Careful, they’ve been known to bite a person’s bear booty while they take a poo.
